At the time of his enlistment in 1862 in the 15th Massachusetts Infantry, William gave his occupation as a carpenter and he was a widower. On 24 Feb 1862, William mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (South Brookfield, per MASSCW), being credited to the quota of West Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
He was wounded in the chest and hand on September 17, 1862 at the Battle of Antietam, Washington County, Maryland and he died on November 5, 1862 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of those wounds. He was buried in November 1862 in the Brookfield Cemetery, Route 9, at Brookfield, Massachusetts.
In 1863 at Brookfield, Massachusetts, his son William Henry Vanever was involved in a guardianship proceeding at the probate court apparently to make provision for the orphan.In Oct 1863 guardianship and a pension to surviving minor children was granted to William Henry Vanever based on his father’s military service. D. Heyde was named guardian and received certificate number 27985. On December 22, 1874, William Henry Vanever married Emma A. Smith in Boston, Massachusetts.
