Meet Samuel Warner

Eldest son of John Warner

Samuel Warner's Family

The eldest son of John Warner was Samuel who was born at Ipswich about 1640. He came to Quaboag with his father in 1665, bringing with him his second wife and three children. No record has been found of the name of his first wife, but he had probably married at the age of 18, prior to 1659. His second marriage, on October 21, 1662, was to Mercy Swan of Rowley, who died in Dunstable on April 3, 1683 after having borne eight children. Samuel married again on May 4, 1684, Mary (Martin) Swallow, widow of Ambrose Swallow at Chelmsford, who bore him another son.

The name of Samuel Warner first appears in the Account book of John Pynchon on December 7, 1666, but the first entry bears a reference to a balance due carried over from a previous book, so that we can place him at Quaboag prior to that date. His accounts continue until December 24, 1671, on which date we note that he paid 1 pound 5 shillings as his share toward the purchase of Quaboag. This also indicated ownership of a single home lot with the usual allotment of other lands.

Like his father, Samuel never became prominent in the affairs of the Plantation, even though being one of the first settlers. He was not appointed one of the committee to administer the affairs of the place in 1667, not did he endorse the petition of 1670 for enlargement of the Plantation. However, his name does appear on the petition of 1673 for incorporation of the town of Brookfield. His name appears on the court records as a plaintiff on May 30, 1675 when Thomas Wilson was presented at the County court at Northampton for "reviling  curfew speaking and obscene words made against Samuel Warner of Brookfield".

After the siege of Brookfield, Samuel and Mercy Warner with their eight young children removed to Dunstable, where Mary died on April 3, 1683, after having given birth to two more children. Samuel was one of the 14 proprietors in Dunstable in 1682 and also one of the seven male members of the church at its organization in the same year. In 1684, Samuel married Mary Swallow as noted above and had one son by her. In 1689, he removed to Groton where he was a selectman in 1696 and where he died before February 1703.
