Highlights in History for the month of July

July 14, 1675, The Nipmuc Indians unite with the Wampanoag forces of King Philip to attack the settlement of Mendon, beginning a series of Indian attacks on the southern frontier of the English colonies.

July 10, 1710,   Massacre of the Haymakers. The monument, erected by the Town in 1912, stands in the Southwest corner of the Old Indian Cemetery, Cottage Street, West Brookfield, MA. in memory of The Haymakers killed by Indians while haying in the fields near the Quaboag River.

July 27, 1777,  French nobleman, 20-year-old Marquis de Lafayette arrives in Philadelphia to volunteer his services for the American revolutionary cause. Congress commissions him a Major General in the Continental Army.  

July 1-3, 1863, The Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most devastating of the conflict and the turning point of the war, sees the Southern Army defeated by the superior numbers and strong defensive positions of the Union Army.
